Duckie Thot is breaking barriers

AUSTRALIAN BEAUTY DUCKIE THOT HAS DEFINITELY MADE HER MARK ON THE INDUSTRY

-

As we approach 2020 and the start of a new decade, we look forward to reinventing ourselves – becoming a better, stronger and smarter version. In the spirit of this new phase, our January issue revolves around reinvention. For this issue, Emirates Woman exclusively caught up with the South Sudanese Aussie, Duckie Thot, to hear about what she is looking forward to in the new year and what has been the highlight of her career so far.

Sister of YouTuber Nikki Perkins, she made her start in the eighth cycle of Australia's Next Top Model, where she finished in third place. After her stint at the series, Duckie made her runway debut at the Yeezy spring/summer 2017 show. Since then, the 24-year-old has strutted down the runway for names like Balmain, Victoria's Secret, SavagexFenty, Mansur Gavriel and more.

However, Duckie didn’t just stop there. After championing inclusivity and diversity in the fashion industry, Duckie dipped her toe into the world of beauty, after becoming L’Oréal Paris’ newest global brand ambassador. She intends to use her influence to give young women of all backgrounds the confidence to succeed.

“I’m looking forward to helping more girls love the beauty of their dark skin. In my mind, I’m going back in time and telling the young girl I was: ‘Dream big, work hard and trust in yourself girl, because one day you’re going to say yes to the number one beauty brand.”

Duckie has also headed campaigns for Fenty Beauty since its launch. Rihanna’s make-up brand made waves in the industry due to its efforts to increase diversity and inclusivity, so it came as no surprise that she would turn to the Aussie beauty.

What goals are you setting for yourself this year? This year (I know it sounds crazy) but I’d love to get back into basketball! I always loved it when I was younger and it’s something I really want to revisit it again. You know, something fun just for me?

Highlight of your career so far? Working closely with John Galliano - that was something special. I’ve always admired his work and to build a rapport with him was for sure a highlight. With a million followers on Instagram, how do you like to use social media? I’m a pretty private person mostly, so I don’t really like to share too much of myself on social platforms. However, I do like to use it to post my work and also personally connect with my friends/followers. I think that’s what I like most about it, the instant connection.

Other than modelling what are your passions? I’m determined to help rebuild my country of South Sudan. I want to be able to use my platform to educate and revisit the conversation that needs to be had. I aspire to help my country become a safe space again. Who in the industry do you want to work with in the future and why? Grace Coddington. I’ve always wanted to work with her and love her styling so much.
