Lens machine This is Nikon’s entry-level DSLR, but don’t let its novice title fool you. The D3200 gives you a 24-megapixel APS-C sensor that’s usually seen on professional SLRs, along with class-leading autofocus and full manual controls. There’s also the excellent photography-course-in-a-camera Guide mode, which will teach would-be pro snappers how to get the best shot whatever the situation. Grand Stores, Dh1,849. Looks old, is new We couldn’t print a round-up of our favourite cameras without the Fujifilm X20. It might just be the best-looking snapper of the decade, boasting a vulcanite body cover, an engraved top plate and chunky shutter button, not to mention an optical viewfinder. Its old-school charm is just skin deep though, as it also packs a handy digital overlay for that viewfinder, the world’s fastest autofocus and a big ⅔in sensor for incredible image quality. Grand Stores, Dh2,299. Worth phoning home about Photography purists among you might cry that this is more phone than camera, but we disagree. It might make calls, but that’s not to say the Galaxy S4 Zoom isn’t worthy of your snap-happy pockets. It sports a 16-megapixel CMOS sensor, 10x optical zoom, proper xenon flash and image stabilisation, and despite its 4.3in screen and mobile Android operating system, we’d still say it’s more camera than phone. Samsung, Dh1,899. Tougher than the rest A chunk of camera tech that you can take just about anywhere, the Panasonic Lumix FT5 gives you a hardy metal front plate that can shrug off more than the odd bump and bruise. It’s able to swim down 13 metres, survive drops of 2 metres and stay active in temperatures of -10°C. It’s also a superb camera, capable of 16-megapixel snaps and Full HD video. Panasonic, Dh1,699. Stunning all-rounder The Sony Cyber-shot HX50 doesn’t go underwater, it will not take replaceable lenses and won’t make a phone call. It’s got no gimmicks whatsoever. It’s just a fantastic pocket camera that matches a whopping 30x optical zoom with a full 20-megapixel resolution for proper, pixel-perfect images. If you’re not after anything specific and just want a killer camera, look no further. Jumbo Electronics, Dh1,999. D E LI P U S O T H P . E P O R U E N A D Y B T X E T
