I am often tempted to buy one of those kitchen knife sets that cost an arm and a leg, but I wonder if I’d make good use of all the knives? Should I just stick to my regular multipurpose knife? When buying a knife, what should I look for?
I agree with you, a fancy knife set can cost the earth, but all you need is a basic knife set that includes a sturdy all-purpose utility knife that has a 13cm blade; a chef’s knife that has a 20cm blade; a vegetable knife with a 8cm blade; a serrated bread knife and perhaps a carving knife if you prefer to handle and slice your own meat.
When choosing a knife, remember the following points: It should be made of high-quality stainless steel; it should not be too light when you lift it; and the grip should feel secure and comfortable. A well-crafted knife will stay with you for a few decades, if not longer.
