MEASURING TIME

-

F

or this week’s letter, I had a few thoughts in mind, until I wrote down the date and it hit me – we are now one-third of the way through 2017. That’s a good, solid fraction, in my book, not something cosmically dazzling like 335/113 (write to me if you know this one without googling!).

What does it mean that a certain, measurable chunk of time has elapsed in our lives, other than we are moving towards that moment when we run out of time? Does it matter if you did something with that time, and who decides what that something is?

Sometimes it’s easier to just not think about those things, and go back to a box set. (I am pretty sure there are some of us who measure time in episodes watched, not days, and perhaps more so as Game of Thrones’ next season creeps closer.)

But according to Mike Peake’s story on page 34, time can feel like a weight around our shoulders, pressing us down until we’re feeling a little breathless, which is odd, because it’s usually a lack of time that makes us feel this way.

Something we can’t properly measure, and in its absence, makes people feel bad? Hey, what gives, time? Mike’s feature may help you look at how you manage your time, if you’re finding it’s running away from you. For instance, how do you perceive time – is it a line stretching in front and trailing behind you, or are you on a track that runs from left to right, or right to left? That, apparently, plays a role in how you use your time. Time well spent, I’d say.

For many of us, that chunk of time called a year is punctuated by big events and festivals, such as one taking place today for Hindu communities called Akshaya Tritiya. It’s a festival of new beginnings, and is celebrated by the buying of gold – hence our focus on the metal in this week’s fashion and beauty pages.

If adding to your personal Fort Knox isn’t on the cards, but buying a new eyeshadow is, make sure you check out the beauty shoot on page 54. If you need a little help in doing the looks we created, head to fridaymagazine.ae, for four step-by-step videos.

Finally, by the time you read this, Friday will have held its second cooking Masterclass – a session making pretzels and eggs Benedict at the Steigenberger Hotel in Dubai. If you want to be the first to sign up for the next one, click the link on our website – we look forward to cooking with you in May.
