Swimming in a sea lit silver by the moonlight sounds idyllic, right? You can now live out that ideal at the Umm Suqeim Beach – the UAE’s first night-swimming beach. Dubai Municipality has opened up a 125m stretch of the beach to midnight laps thanks to two 12m smart light poles installed by Dubai-based company D Idea Media that illuminate the beach with high-intensity lighting. Improved visibility isn’t the only safety feature; the Dubai Municipality has also assigned extra lifeguards to man the beach. Umm Suqeim Beach has also added another feather to its cap – it’s the UAE’s first smart beach. Besides the solar and wind-powered Smart Poles, the beach also has solar-powered changing rooms and wi-fi hotspots. Swimmers can venture 30 metres out into the sea and no further.
