Friday

SAY HELLO TO THE NEW FRIDAY

-

The new year is the most obvious time for renewal, but it’s not like that everywhere. In some countries, it’s back-to-school time – when people give a big stretch, sigh, and heave off the sun lounger and back into the real world – hopefully, with renewed vigour. Today’s Friday takes a similar approach as you return from your summer break – we are refreshed, and, we hope, refreshing. Expect a bright, fresh layout, courtesy of the magazine’s art editor Mark.

What hasn’t changed is our love of a good story, recipe, photograph and recommendation – usually something you haven’t heard about anywhere else.

In this week’s edition, Mrinal Shekar looks at the sari in as much of its stunning diversity as we could find across the UAE, with the help of a dynamic collective of women dedicated to preserving its legacy. That doesn’t only mean getting together (thanks to social media!) to discuss ancient weaves, but also actively wearing the garment and supporting the artisans still making perfect weaves by hand. (Unlike embroidery, when you’re weaving an intricate pattern directly into fabric, sometimes even using real gold, there is no room for error.)

Stylist Amrita Divecha took inspiration from the latest sari-draping trends for this week’s fashion editorial, and she also kicks off a monthly column on the latest in desi fashion. You’ll want to come back for more of that in October.

We’re still committed to seeking out the most exciting dishes to put on your plate, this week delving into the world of Caucasian cuisine – something we’ve been seeing an ever-increasing variety of in UAE restaurants. Arva Ahmed explores the trend and culture of these foods – as familiar as they are surprising.

Then, make it yourself: We’ve sourced recipes from one of the summer’s hottest cookbooks, Tiko Tuskadze’s Supra. Make the iconic cheese bread, khachapuri, and if you can resist eating it for a minute (not easy!), send us a snap.

We’d love to hear what you think of the new look Friday, too, of course.

While Friday has a bright, fresh layout, what hasn’t changed is our love of a good story, photograph and recommendation
