The new year is the most ob­vi­ous time for re­newal, but it’s not like that ev­ery­where. In some coun­tries, it’s back-to-school time – when peo­ple give a big stretch, sigh, and heave off the sun lounger and back into the real world – hope­fully, with re­newed vigour. Today’s Fri­day takes a sim­i­lar ap­proach as you re­turn from your sum­mer break – we are re­freshed, and, we hope, re­fresh­ing. Ex­pect a bright, fresh lay­out, courtesy of the mag­a­zine’s art editor Mark.

What hasn’t changed is our love of a good story, recipe, pho­to­graph and rec­om­men­da­tion – usu­ally some­thing you haven’t heard about anywhere else.

In this week’s edi­tion, Mri­nal Shekar looks at the sari in as much of its stun­ning di­ver­sity as we could find across the UAE, with the help of a dy­namic col­lec­tive of women ded­i­cated to pre­serv­ing its legacy. That doesn’t only mean get­ting to­gether (thanks to so­cial me­dia!) to dis­cuss an­cient weaves, but also ac­tively wear­ing the gar­ment and sup­port­ing the ar­ti­sans still mak­ing per­fect weaves by hand. (Un­like em­broi­dery, when you’re weav­ing an in­tri­cate pat­tern di­rectly into fab­ric, some­times even us­ing real gold, there is no room for er­ror.)

Stylist Am­rita Divecha took in­spi­ra­tion from the lat­est sari-drap­ing trends for this week’s fash­ion ed­i­to­rial, and she also kicks off a monthly col­umn on the lat­est in desi fash­ion. You’ll want to come back for more of that in Oc­to­ber.

We’re still com­mit­ted to seek­ing out the most ex­cit­ing dishes to put on your plate, this week delv­ing into the world of Cau­casian cui­sine – some­thing we’ve been see­ing an ever-in­creas­ing va­ri­ety of in UAE restau­rants. Arva Ahmed ex­plores the trend and cul­ture of th­ese foods – as fa­mil­iar as they are sur­pris­ing.

Then, make it your­self: We’ve sourced recipes from one of the sum­mer’s hottest cook­books, Tiko Tuskadze’s Supra. Make the iconic cheese bread, khacha­puri, and if you can re­sist eating it for a minute (not easy!), send us a snap.
