Friday

THE GOLDEN YEARS

-

Two people who don’t live in the past: Manish Malhotra and Vineet Bhatia, both of whom appear in this week’s edition

It doesn’t take much for us at Friday to go down a nostalgia rabbit hole. Three of us in the team just spent a silly amount of time talking about a bakery from home (that I have personally never even visited). The conversation then morphed into remembering record stores in our hometowns, and then the reading of some rather biased Wikipedia pages. Do people in other countries – when they are in their home countries – waste time in this way? (Note: None of the staff in question watches Game of Thrones ,sowe don’t have that as an option for timewasting chat.)

Devinder Bains – in her second monthly column for Friday on page 25 – asks about the benefits and negatives of the nostalgia epidemic that seems to afflict expatriates at a younger age than the general population. See if you agree.

Thinking about the good old days isn’t restricted to pies and vinyl, of course: Many of our possessions are imbued with memories – especially jewellery, which is so prevalent at this time of year. If you’re not heading out to buy some spectacular baubles for Diwali (take your pick from the most dazzling ones in stores now, as featured in our gorgeous photoshoot by Amrita Divecha on page 48), you’re probably lovingly pawing through a velvet-lined box full of gold, rubies and special memories. We would love to hear the tales behind those gems – share them with us in Story Tellers.

Two people who are not living in the past are Manish Malhotra and Vineet Bhatia, two incredible Indian creatives, both of whom appear in this week’s edition. Manish took fashion editor Lindsay Judge and photographer Aiza Castillo-Domingo backstage at his recent fashion show in Dubai (page 38); amidst the acres of chiffon and sequins, he spoke about how this is one of the most exciting times in his career – and of the excitement that the future holds.

Vineet, as a chef, of course looks to the past for inspiration, but his sweet recipes on page 64 are a showcase of modernity – without being at all gimmicky. Perfect for making some new memories. Happy Diwali!
