- Natalie Long, editor Reach me at nlong@gulfnews.com

What are you planning to do today? If you only do one thing, then make it having a read of our Weekend Guide on page 17. There’s only one element that’s changed on this page since last week – answers on a postcard, please – but we’re sure you’re going to get even more out of it. Of course the aim is to get you out into the UAE in the next seven days, with our digest of the best of events taking place around the country. Let us know if you get to any of the fun that’s going on – the season is in full swing and there’s something for everyone.

Among the events you should look out for in November are Taste of Abu Dhabi, the capital’s version of the annual food festival. Highlights at this year’s event include appearances by Mexican restaurateur Richard Sandoval (he just opened a Toro Toro in Abu Dhabi!) and Indian superstar chef Sanjeev Kapoor. We asked Sanjeev what the top dishes are at his restaurants – and he shares the recipes with

Friday readers this week. Once the weather finally cools, I predict his lalla mussa dal (page 53) is going to be a Friday team lunch staple. Also coming to an emirate near you: The Sharjah International Book Fair. This massive literary event – now in its 36th edition – has enough authors attending to keep your head in a book for the next year, as well as workshops, cooking demonstrations and even a cosplay competition. Friday’s resident bookworm Anand Raj OK choses some of the don’t-miss events at the fair; he also speaks to several of the authors lined up to attend. Hear from ex-journalist Manu Joseph and ex-ad exec Anuja Chauhan in this week’s edition of the magazine on page 34.

It’s still October, however, and that means we’re still doing everything we can to bring your attention to breast cancer – an illness that will strike 1 in 8 women in the UAE, and affect many more people; a wide circle of family and loved ones that support the patients, in fact. Talking

about cancer is a tricky one, but, as mental health experts tell us, it’s better to discuss it than avoid the topic. Melanie Swan explores the issue on page 26. We were again honoured this week to have three women who told us their stories of dealing with the disease – focusing on the reality of what what comes after a mastectomy. We’re very grateful to them for their honest accounts.

We know you love travel, but if you’ve never thought of visiting South America, our two-part series on all the nations of the continent on

page 58 should get you searching for flights – it’s certainly made me rethink my bucket list destinations. Next week, we continue with everything from Ecuador to Uruguay!
