MOMMIE DEAR EST

- Natalie Long, editor Reach me at nlong@gulfnews.com

Aword of advice: Don’t do an internet search of the details of Anand Raj OK’s feature on page 20 until quite a long time after you’ve had your breakfast. As always, Anand finds amazing people and eeks out their incredible tales in our weekly pages. This time is just a little bit more, well, fly-infested. He caught up with Douglas Preston, who flew into the jungles of Honduras (don’t ask where, exactly – it’s classified) and wrote the story of a team uncovering what appears to be a lost city. It was gruelling work that led to a life-changing illness – and yet, he’s probably going to go back. Madness, or perseverence? Perhaps sometimes the line between the two is not that distinct.

Perseverence, interestingly, is a word that crops up again and again in this week’s Storytellers (page 10), in which we asked which quality of your mother you would like to emulate. I believe it is the number one quality submitted by that those readers who wrote in to us (many, many of you did – we are sorry we can’t use all of your words, but they are online at fridaymagazine.ae). Is motherhood anything like tramping through a jungle infested with deadly snakes (with an amazing goal at the end)? Only the mothers among you can tell us that – perhaps we’ll ask that one for mother’s day next year.

Unanimously, readers wrote in about how they love, respect and look up to their mums, and we’re not immune to the good feeling and positive that comes from being around mums (except when you haven’t tidied up). Why is why we decided it’s time for another Friday makeover – one of our fashion team’s favourite shoots to do, because it means we get to give a day of fashion, pampering and photoshoot fun to some of our lovely readers.

Next Wednesday, we celebrate our mothers, but clearly, they deserve our love every day. Similarly, Devinder Bains also makes the case (page 14) that International Women’s Day, which fell last week, should also be a daily occurence; a reflex that causes us to question the status quo every time we hear of inequality or abuse.

Is motherhood like tramping through a jungle infested with deadly snakes (with an amazing goal at the end)?
