From foods that could help boost fertility to the medical term for uncontrollable laughter, find out what’s happening in the world of health.

The saying ‘You are what you eat’ really does come into play when you are trying to have a baby. By eating the right foods and staying active, you can take a step towards boosting your fertility and combatting fluctuating hormone levels. According to Dr Pankaj Shrivastav, director of Conceive Gynaecology & Fertility Hospital in Sharjah, these are some foods to include in your diet to improve your fertility.

Brussels sprouts:

Loaded with folate, this vegetable has been found to help increase sperm count. Women too benefit, as it is said to keep the uterine lining healthy.

Butternut squash:

High in essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, which is great for sperm health and overall hormone production (one serving of squash provides your entire daily recommended allowance), vitamin C (essential for healthy ovulation) and carotenes (good for egg health). It is also a great source for healthy carbs.

Pumpkin seeds:

These are rich in zinc, termed the most important fertility mineral as it is vital for healthy fetal growth and facilitates healthy sperm production. Among women, research has linked consumption of pumpkin seeds to reduction in early miscarriages.

Sweet potatoes:

Sweet potatoes and yams are excellent to include in the fertility-friendly diet. A great source of healthy carbs, they are also rich in vitamins C, B and B6, which protect against cell damage, thereby improving egg health.

Apples:

Apples are considered a balanced fruit with a good mix of nutrients. They are low in calories so are a great choice for getting the nutritional benefits of fruit without the high levels of sugar found in other fruits. Apples are also recommended to increase sperm count.
