I STRUGGLE TO STAY AWAY FROM CARBS

-

Q I’m overweight and find it difficult to stay away from carbohydrates. Help.

A I can understand exactly how you feel – it’s tough to stay away from carbohydrates and it’s difficult to say no when you are with friends who are eating junk food. But, that said, it’s also tough to wake up every morning and feel like you are not at your very best. It is also tough to deal with all the health issues that come along with not taking care of yourself and your body.

You will need to consciously make a decision to change. At least 80 per cent of clients, do not respond well to eating all kinds of carbohydrates. The reason is partly because the more carbs you eat, the more carbs you want to eat. You will crave more sugar and refined carbs especially if you start your day with carbs.

Managing your carbs well is one of the best things you can do for your metabolism. When you consume the right amount at the right time, your body will secrete a balanced amount of insulin.

The best time to consume fast-active carbs such as rice, potato and fruits is when you are physically active. Avoiding processed carbs from whole wheat bread, biscuits and pasta is an absolute must. Also important is to say no to carbs that are available in disguised candy such as protein bars, fruits juices and sugary cereals.

Be smart with your carbs and you will never feel deprived again.

One tip: Increasing the amount of good fat you eat will dramatically help control your sugar cravings especially when you follow the ‘fat first’ principle, which means you eat fat first thing in the morning. This has a calming effect on your gut and helps with fat loss, too.
