I’M ALLERGIC TO COSMETICS

-

QI’m a 36-year old woman and have been suffering from recurrent skin rashes on my face and neck area. I was told it was an allergy to my cosmetic products. I have changed brands but my skin rashes are still persistently bothering me.

ATo make a diagnosis of allergy to cosmetic products (medically known as allergic contact dermatitis) extended skin patch tests to the suspected products must be done. Changing brands before undergoing a thorough professional consultation, examination and investigation is only a waste of money and time.

In a majority of sufferers, the complaints are attributed to irritant contact reactions due to having a “sensitive” skin rather than having true allergic contact dermatitis. These allergic reactions are mostly caused by preservatives, fragrances, or colouring agents in cosmetic products. It is extremely difficult to find products without these ingredients. Even brands that claim to be “hypoallergenic” could produce allergic reactions.

In your case, I strongly suggest that you consult an experienced dermatologist who will suggest an array of tests before confirming a diagnosis.

In my opinion, you will definitely need to get an extended skin allergy patch test done as a part of investigative process.

It is also highly advisable that you stop using all kinds of cosmetic products until your skin complaints are resolved.
