PAST PER FECT

- MrinalShekar, Editor Reach me at mshekar@gulfnews.com

As residents of this beautiful country, there is no denying that there arises in us a certain excitement when we see the future being built right in front of our eyes. From the ever-evolving skyline to the swanky infrastructure coming together at breakneck speed, there is a sense of awe and avid anticipation in us about what’s to come.

Having said that, I am equally enamoured by the past. Imagining what life was like for our ancestors, the ingenuity involved in how they built things – without the privilege of cutting-edge technology – and the wisdom from it all that has unfortunately faded with time, gives me goosebumps.

While many would wonder what the purpose is of revelling in the past, I believe knowing my roots keeps me grounded. And following some of the traditions that my family followed, which I grew up watching, I feel forms an almost tangible bond with my loved ones.

And for these reasons exactly I loved the first feature in our new series ‘In The Neighbourhood’ on page 30.

Focusing on the very quaint and very iconic Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, earlier known as Al Bastakiya, the feature showcases the stunning testimony the district is of the times gone by.

While the pictures depict the pretty architecture that has been preserved or recreated (houses made of palm fronds and stones and corals from the Dubai Creek), it is the words that will take you on a Alice in Wonderland-like journey into the past. My favourite bit is about how the name Al Bastakiya came about, proving how this beautiful desert country has always been a fertile ground for all those from across the world who want to realise their dream.

I don’t want to give away any spoilers, so please read the article to know more.
