Food Talk: Garlic
Garlic packs several medicinal and antibacterial properties. Amera Marian Varghese, clinical dietician, Mediclinic Welcare Hospital, says, ‘It contains antioxidants like allicin that helps fight infections and prevents bacteria-related food poisoning.’ It is effective against high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, cholesterol, colds and hair loss. ‘The best way to enjoy garlic’s health benefits is to eat it raw, or close to raw. You can also use garlic as dressings by pressing a few cloves of fresh garlic, and mixing it with extra virgin olive oil and salt. To boost immunity, brew a tea of garlic with a bit of honey or ginger.’
