SLAYING THE NAYSAYERS

Continuing on what I said last week, the year end is an uncomforta­ble period to be in. As we reflect upon and audit situations, events, and all that has short- as well as longterm consequenc­es on our lives, we come out feeling short-changed. We console ourselves by saying that it is a process that helps us to reset and evaluate our goals; makes us wiser, we tell ourselves.

And then after much deliberati­on and dilemma we declutter, detox and discard all that limits our mind and body. It is an education that we hope will help us make smarter decisions in the following year; will enable us to spread our wings and soar to new heights.

However clichéd that might sound, there is no denying that appraising our lives is vital to our personal growth.

But there is one glitch that we quite often overlook while trying to future-proof our lives. We disregard the role people play in defining our attitude and approach to what we expect of our future.

As Mike Peake writes in his feature on toxic people on page 30, we quite often have individual­s in our lives who dim our shine, hold us back with their so-called cautionary stance, and, God forbid if we fail, are the first

ones to add insult to injury with their ‘I told you so’ reactions.

While their presence can be quite aggravatin­g, I believe true wisdom lies in filtering their viewpoint, understand­ing the context and adopting all the dos and don’ts that can be the wind beneath our wings.

I guess there lies the secret to winning them over. What do you think?
