Commonly known as the Jon Stewart of Egypt, former cardiac surgeon Bassem Youssef has long provided a satirical voice to Middle Eastern affairs since the Arab Spring in 2011. His show
El Barnameg achieved 30 million viewers per episode at its peak between 2011 and 2013, launching Youssef to stardom. A 2012 appearance on The Daily Show gave him prominence in the US, where he hosted the 43rd International Emmy Awards in New York City in 2015. In the summer of last year the comedian’s new show, Democracy Handbook with Bassem Youssef launched in America, taking him to new levels of success.
