In focus Rohingya flee into Bangladesh as crisis deepens
Rohingyas walk through the Leda unregistered camp in Teknaf, Bangladesh, after fleeing from oppression in Myanmar. More than 65,000 Rohinya – a mostly stateless Muslim group of about 1.1 million people – have left their homes since October last year after the Burmese army launched a campaign it calls ‘clearance operations’. The move was in response to an attack on border police, believed to have been carried out by Rohingya militants. The refugees – largely from Myanmar’s Rakhine state – mainly live in makeshift camps and refugee centers, telling stories of human rights abuses by the Burmese army.
