A step ahead with reading initiative

-

I am delighted to hear that 2016 has been declared the year of reading by the His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE (‘We aim to make the UAE a capital of knowledge’, Gulf News, December 6). Reading is the only way to create a new generation of scientists, scholars, intellectuals, innovators, writers, poets and good humanitarians. Reading is the food and vitamin for the growth and expansion of the mind. No country can achieve progress without having good reading habits among their people. I like the UAE because it is a step ahead of the rest of the world. From Mr Sunny Joseph Mala Kerala, India

We are told to read

I t was wisely said. Even in Islam, the first word that was revealed to the Prophet [PBUH] was: “Read”. From Ms Mounia Mahroug Abu Dhabi Facebook comment

Importance of reading

I love reading. I read every day for pleasure and most days for career improvement. However, I must forward this article to my students! Fingers crossed, they will listen to Shaikh Khalifa, as I’m always telling them about the importance of reading. From Ms Lynn Davison UAE Facebook comment

Good readers, good leaders

I t’s so true. As the knowledge that we get from reading books of great writers is nothing, but sharing their experiences of past and making us better equipped for the future. Good readers can always turn to be good leaders. From Mr Manoj Hingorani Dubai Facebook comment

Inspiring us

S haring the experiences of great personalities will help us be well equipped and it will inspire us to do better. We will want to do more with new constructive ideas. From Ms Laila Pokkakkillath Moideen UAE Facebook comment

Technology hinders

T ake away technology and electronic tablets from the hands of children if

you really want to see a generation that reads. From Mr Nawaf Abu Ghazaleh UAE Facebook comment

Didn’t stop me!

V ideo games require literacy, so I don’t agree Mr Nawaf Abu Ghazaleh. Just saying, I’m a gamer and reader! From Mr Haytham Mansour Dubai Facebook comment

Necessary encouragement

T ruly, we are in an age where media consumption is mostly through audio and video. Shaikh Khalifa’s insights are a welcome suggestion for today’s generation and a must if you want to stand out. From Mr Mark Lewis UAE Facebook comment

Winning over voters

W hile congratulating Aziz Al Hasni for constantly winning the confidence of people, the Shura Council in Oman offers a good platform for people to voice their concerns (‘Omani taxi driver’s historic journey to Shura Council’, Gulf News, December 6). The fact is that people’s involvement always makes a difference as it shows the evolving trend towards a thoughtful approach to issues that concerns the society. The good turnout of voters in the recently held the Shura Council elections is clearly demonstrating citizens realising their individual responsibility and commitment and how each one can help lead the way forward.

Al Hasni’s triumph is a good example of winning people’s confidence and how he is reliable in addressing community issues. Ideally, the Shura Council is one

of the dedicated platforms for people of Oman to voice their concerns and lead by example for creating a people-oriented society, which cares for its citizens. It is a good sign of a cross-section of people valuing their rights in the true spirit and making the best use of the opportunity in the right context. From Mr Ramachandran Nair Oman

It takes guts!

S ometimes in these types of affairs – and really in most areas of life – at some point, guts become more important than education! From Mr Nick F. UAE Facebook comment

Dishonourable

A nything that was evidence was taken from the home by the FBI (‘California shooters’ home thrown open to media’, Gulf News, December 6). Anyone upset about showing the photos of the shooter, how is it disrespectful to show their photos? Photos of the shooters would be shown for anyone who had done this. It is very sad for their families and their daughter who did not know this attack was planned and did not have anything to do with it. It is sad for everyone.

It has been declared as an act of terror. They were in a police standoff with the wife firing a machine gun from the back of their vehicle. The building they attacked was a centre to help the disabled. Even more pathetic and dishonourable! From Ms Andrea Sampson UAE Facebook comment

Killing is wrong

I t is extremely wrong and unfair for anyone to murder any human being anywhere! It doesn’t matter what nationality or religion a person is. Killing another human being is wrong! From Ms April Jones McCabe Dubai Facebook comment

Doesn’t make sense

I find contradictions in all the information. They say neither was on the FBI watch lists. But they confirm the wife had “soft communications” with known terrorists. It doesn’t make any sense to me. From Mr John Saf David UAE Facebook comment Visit Abandoned, abused and forgotten. These animals need your support. Adopt, foster and help rehome an abandoned pet.

Not the case

O nce the police are finished, they hand the place over to the owner (landlord) and he/she can allow the media in or not. It’s up to him. From Ms Sharlene L. Smith Cardozo UAE Facebook comment

Attention seeking

B ad press is good press and that’s all Tyson Fury is looking for — the attention (‘Boxing champion Tyson Fury says women belong in the kitchen’, Gulf News, December 6)! Either that or he is soft in the head after the punches received during his so-called boxing career to have the nerve to say women belong in the kitchen. From Ms Gillian Gibson UAE Facebook comment

In the dark ages!

I t is greatly saddening and upsetting at the same time to read such discriminating statements made by a champion. Fury must be ashamed of himself for believing that women are best suited to do kitchen-related chores such as preparing a good cup of tea for their male counterparts. It is due to such narrowmindedness that women struggle for their rights even in today’s modern era.

The boxer should understand that women are on a par with men and competing well. There are women athletes who are creating history and making a name for themselves and their country by participating in sports at the international level. He is clearly living in the dark ages to have such a view. From Ms Fatima Suhail Sharjah Facebook comment
