Tell us about your character in

Oh my God, Killer Croc. Well, I can tell you one thing: he’s going to scare the hell out of you. You’re going to fall in love with this guy. Such a great character to play. [It was] very, very tough. Took between three to five hours just to get into the make-up, then I had to wear it for 12 hours [and] perform and fight. It’s probably one of the most challenging characters I’ve played.

But it pushes the barrier, because we chose specifically not to use contact lenses, so we use the eyes, and you see him as almost a creature, as a soul. Even the prosthetics that we used [were] as real as we could get them, and they were literally glued to my face, so that every movement, every nuance in my face, is conveyed through [them]. You’re going to love that film. That’s all I can say. You’re going to love it.

It’s such a big cast, including Leto and Smith. Does everyone get to work with everyone?

Everyone gets to work with everyone. David Ayer, the director, has a particular process. He brings all the cast together and we rehearse for a month to six weeks before we even go into principal photography.

What that did is it bonded us — everybody from Jared to Will.

We’re all in it, as a squad. When we come to film it, we’re like a squad. We had a lot of fun. I’ve worked with Will before. We did Concussion. If you’re going to do tough movies, that’s the guy you do it with, because he gets the troops together and makes sure we have fun doing it.

How would you describe the movie in three words?

Three words? All I can say is: pioneering, epic, adventurous ... with an edge. How about that?

What kind of person is Will Smith on set?

I think one of the reasons for his success is because he’s very down to earth. There’s no pretence. We’re all the same level and we get on with the job. I think that’s what makes him a star — he’s just a real person.

Anyone who meets him is going to say the same thing. He’s just great — basic, down-to-earth guy.
