The announcement finalises a commitment between Boeing and Strata’s parent Mubadala in 2012

Abu Dhabi’s Strata Manufacturing has won a multiyear contract from Boeing to manufacture vertical fins for the 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

The contract, announced at the Farnborough Air Show in the United Kingdom yesterday, finalises a commitment between Boeing and Strata’s parent Mubadala Development Company in 2012.

“The announcement today [Thursday] is a reflection of the long-standing relationship between Strata and Boeing, and is testament to the trust that one of the world’s largest aerospace companies has placed in its partnership with Strata,” Strata chief executive, Badr Al Olama, said in a statement. “The expansion of our relationship with Boeing further demonstrates our ongoing commitment to develop a global aerospace manufacturing hub in Nibras — the Al Ain Aerospace Park.”

The multi-year contract is the latest in a series agreements between Mubadala and Boeing since 2009. In 2013, Mubadala and Boeing agreed to supply $2.5 billion (Dh9.2 billion) in advanced composites and aero structures to Boeing’s commercial programmes. The value of the award announced yesterday was not given.

On Wednesday, Mubadala announced Strata had won two contracts from Airbus worth over $1 billion to be a source for the Horizontal Tail Plane for the A320 and the Inboard Flaps for the A350-900 aircraft.

In a separate announcement, Mubadala said it had finalised an agreement with Rolls-Royce to build an engine maintenance centre in Abu Dhabi and manufacture engine components in the emirate. The Approved Maintenance Centre will carry out work on the Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines used to power Airbus A350 jets and the components facility will build parts for the Rolls-Royce Trent family engines.

The maintenance centre will service up to 150 engines a year in a new facility built in Al Ain, the Abu Dhabi city on the Omani border. Construction will start in early 2017 and the facility will open in 2021, Mubadala said.
