Record rain turns Hyderabad into ocean of discomfort
City and its surrounding areas record 3cm of rains within just two hours
It was yet another day of heavy rains, flooding and massive traffic jams in Hyderabad as the city and its surroundings recorded three centimetres of rain in just two hours yesterday afternoon.
A day after the city was pounded by a record 16cm of rains in few hours brought many areas of Hyderabad under water and forced the authorities to shift more than 500 families to safer places, normality was yet to return. Electricity had not been restored at the time of writing in Nizampet colony. Heavy pumps were deployed to remove water from Bandaru Layout colony in Nizampet.
Rain-related mishaps
Rain-related mishaps have claimed three lives in the city and scores of others were injured. People living on the ground-floor of many colonies and multi-storeyed complexes were forced to flee in panic and take shelter in the upper floors.
The floods in the “Chemical Drain” which brings the industrial pollutants and effluents from industries in city suburbs to Hussain Sagar have added to the woes of the people.
Froth caused by chemicals had accumulated at many places and people coming in touch with the froth and polluted water have complained of skin rashes and burning.
Hyderabad Meteorological Centre said the low pressure area over West Central Bay of Bengal was causing incessant rains. It warned of more rains over Andhra Pradesh and Telangana over the next two days.
Heavy rains were also lashing other parts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. After Hyderabad, Guntur was the worst hit as rain water entered several colonies and residential areas. “There was up to three feet water on some of the roads and in residential areas”, an official in Guntur said.
