6 THINGS TO LEARN FROM ITALY
1 It is critical to have a holistic approach to renewable energy with constant monitoring, planning and evaluation. Careful planning and appropriate management regimes must be put in place. 2 Customers must be aware of the costs involved in the process of rapid development of a renewable energy strategy. Renewable energy costs are spread over fewer operating hours than conventional generation and, as such, expenditure per unit of output remains high, making financial support in the form of subsidies necessary in liberalised power markets. 3 The experience of Italy in incentivising renewable energy suggests the need to redesign markets to improve both short-term performance and ensure the adequacy of long-term investment. 4 It is important to have full accountability on projects Countries must 5 develop an orderly system of distribution and connection to the grid Countries must have 6 fully fledged capacity building activities for all the stakeholders involved
