Two Emirati teenagers have been detained for performing a dangerous stunt in Al Ain with a stolen pickup and damaged public property near Al Ain Airport.

They put the lives of motorists, pedestrians and other people in danger by performing the stunt near a roundabout close to the airport recently, said a statement issued by the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD) yesterday.

The public prosecution ordered them held until legal procedures are completed.

The prosecution warned that strict action would be taken against those who indulge in reckless driving and perform stunts on the road.

Abu Dhabi Police took swift action against the teenagers to protect the lives of people and public property. UAE laws stipulate imprisonment up to three years for such offences and offenders have to pay compensation if they damage any properties.

The ADJD statement said the two young Emiratis stole the parked pickup, removed its number plate, drove to a petrol station and filled the tank and fled without paying the bill.

After that they drove towards Al Ain airport and performed the stunt on the grass near a roundabout in the airport’s vicinity.

They damaged grass on an area of 20 square metres and wasted 100 litres of water by damaging the irrigation system. The total damage is estimated at Dh11,000.

After damaging grass and irrigation system, they fled from the scene but police chased them until their vehicle became stuck in a desert area and arrested them.

The Al Ain police control room received many phone calls from the public about the stunt. Many people took pictures and videos of the stunt and posted them on social media.

The prosecution ordered them held and to pay compensation for the damage caused to public property.

They have also been charged with offences such as stealing a vehicle, driving it without a number plate, evading the police, failing to pay their fuel bill and performing stunts and damaging public property.
