Anewlywed Indian man has survived a suicide attempt after he found the body of his wife hanging from a ceiling fan in their Dubai flat, Dubai Police said yesterday.
The man has since been released from hospital and he repatriated his wife’s body home to Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala from Sharjah airport.
Last Thursday, the man found a suicide note in his apartment scribbled with a parting message: “I will leave you forever and will not be back in your life again.”
After writing the note, the woman hanged herself with a piece of cloth, the police said.
Shortly after, the husband slashed his wrist trying to end his life too. The man was rescued by paramedics and rushed to Rashid Hospital.
Major-General Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, Assistant to the Dubai Police Chief for Criminal Investigation Affairs, said the police found the note in the flat written by the woman who was married only three months before her death.
“She hanged herself after a dispute with her husband and left a note that she was leaving him forever.
“The husband was shocked and tried to put an end to his life, too, by cutting his artery but he survived. It was a suicide and there is no criminal suspicion in the case,” Major-General Al Mansouri said.
Lieutenant-Colonel Abdullah Al Hafeet, deputy director of Al Ghusais police station, told Gulf
News that they responded to a call on April 20 about a suicide in a flat in the area.
“The woman was a 27-yearold identified as K.K., and she hanged herself using a piece of cloth from the ceiling fan. And her husband was transferred to Rashid Hospital to recover from the injury after he cut his wrist,” Lt-Colonel Al Hafeet said.
Police went to the hospital around 4.30pm last Thursday and questioned the husband who claimed the couple had an argument over a dispute after which his wife locked herself in the bedroom.
He said he left the house to give her a chance to calm down around 1.30pm.
When he returned, the door was still locked and he broke it open to find his wife’s body hanging from the ceiling fan. He cut the cloth and gave her first aid in a bid to revive her.
The husband said he was in a state of shock, and that he walked into the kitchen and cut his artery using a knife.
“He is now in a stable condition but he will be referred to the prosecution on a charge of attempting suicide,” Lt-Colonel Al Hafeet said.
The woman had started working with a private healthcare group hardly two months ago, sources said.
When contacted, a spokesperson of the group said in an emailed statement, “It is with great sympathy that we acknowledge the loss of one of our employees who had been with us for the last 1.5 months. Due to employee confidentiality policies and our respect for the family’s need for privacy at this difficult time, we will not able to share any information. Our deepest condolences and prayers are with the family and we are taking utmost measures to support them in this unfortunate circumstance.”
