Dubai Police rescued a camel which fell into an abandoned well in Al Lisaili area along Dubai-Al Ain Road, police said yesterday.

Colonel Ahmad Atik Bu Ruqaiba, deputy director of the search and rescue department at Dubai Police, said they were alerted about a camel that had fallen into a ditch on Tuesday evening.

“When we went, we saw a camel trapped inside a small abandoned well. The well was abandoned several years ago and the water inside was dirty and toxic. The well cover was broken and we don’t know yet how the camel fell into this small hole and got stuck inside,” Colonel Bu Ruqaiba told Gulf News.

“The challenge was that the well opening was small and there was little space left for someone to go down and strap the camel so it could be pulled up. We used our equipment to widen the well’s opening. We were careful to avoid hurting the camel,” he added.

Dubai Police asked Dubai Municipality to send a water tanker to pump out the water from the well and then a member of the rescue crew went down and used a belt to strap up the camel so it could be hauled up. “It took three hours of continous work to rescue the camel. The animal was fine and was able to walk free,” Col Bu Ruqaiba said.
