Breaking the glass ceiling in Afghanistan

-

I n a country where the idea of gender equality is hypothetical, the advent of such a revolutionary step taken by the fearless youth in Afghanistan is highly commendable (‘New magazine and TV channel give Afghan women a cautious voice’, Gulf News, June 21). The term ‘gender equality’ has been exhausted to such an extent that many of us often trivialise the need for it. I’m sure that this bold initiative will be the start of a new era for women in Afghanistan. The change seekers that are advocating for this cause will never cease to influence young and old minds alike in the years to come. From Ms Rebeca Monis Dubai

Lesson for shopkeepers

I t is interesting to read the Gulf News report about the Algerian woman who has been accused of going on a shoplifting spree, because it was an easy and quick job (‘Deaf and mute woman robs six jewellers’, Gulf News, June 21). Actually, it is a warning to all the Gold Souq shopowners to take extra precautions and keep an eye on customers. When kleptomaniacs find it easy to steal and leave unnoticed, they will definitely try. It is the pleasure they count upon, rather than the money. Let it be a lesson for all shopkeepers. Feet firmly on the ground

P akistan’s cricket captain Sarfaraz Ahmed is a simple and likeable personality (‘Watch what Pakistan cricket team captain Sarfaraz Ahmed did when a fan in a wheelchair (Fawad Haider) visited him at 4.15am!’, Gulf News, June 22)! In a cricket crazy nation, it’s commendable to stay humble with feet firmly on the ground. He may just be my second favourite player after Wasim Akram among Pakistani players. Stay humble

H e is a very humble and simple person. In fact, all the youngsters on our team,

Pakistan, are from a humble background. I wish and pray they stay the same and help revive cricket in our country. From Mr Nudrat Zahoor UAE Facebook comment

Keeping a good spirit

I see many sports persons in my country, India, and when they play one match and become stars with cars, bungalows and property, they change. I’m really surprised to see how a person who led a team of a nation is so simple and kind. Keep up the good spirit, Ahmad. Congratulations to all Pakistani brothers and sisters on a great win. I hope in the future that both our countries and its peoples will live in peace and harmony. From Mr Cedrick Fernandes UAE Facebook comment

What it’s all about

T his is what sports should be all about. Encouraging people to do good for others and for being such a big inspiration to work hard whatever the situation you are in. Kudos and respect. From Mr Santos BernTere UAE Facebook comment

Lots of respect

I don’t like cricket, but this man seems down to Earth. He didn’t even know they were taking videos. Most players wouldn’t be nice behind the camera and media. I have lots of respect for this man. From Mr Adil H. M. Dubai Facebook comment

He united Germany

H elmut Kohl was the longest serving German chancellor after Otto von Bismarck, having led Germany for 16 years (‘Architect of German reunification’, Gulf News June17). He was a supporter of greater European integration and one of the main architects of the Maastricht Treaty. It was during his time that the euro currency was introduced and this strengthened the European Union. Kohl will also be remembered as the man behind the unification of West and East Germany in 1989. The dissolution of the Soviet Union paved the way for the end of Cold War. Kohl took this opportunity to unify East with West Germany. Freedom is something that is very important for all and reunification of Germany lead to boosting the status of Germany internationally. Although his political career was tainted by the scandal involving him accepting political donations on behalf of his party, the fact that he was spared possible corruption charges out of respect for his years of leadership proves that he was a man Germany has and will always revere for the coming years.
