Heavy rains cause flooding in parts of Hyderabad
Many areas left without electricity, industrial effluent overflows
Aflood situation prevailed in parts of Hyderabad yesterday, following record heavy rains overnight.
Daily life was affected badly as many areas of the city were hit by the heavy rains.
Keesara in Ranga Reddy district recorded the highest rainfall of 17cm, followed by 11cm in Uppal, 10cm in Malkajgiri and Balapur and 6cm in Medchal.
Within the city Secunderabad received 9cm, while Amberpet and Khairatabad received 7cm each.
Water clogging on the roads created a traffic logjam and the commuters coming to the city had a very difficult time as the drains overflowed on the roads and water entered the homes in low-lying areas.
The rains, which started around 9pm on Wednesday night, continued until the morning.
It is very rare that the city or surrounding areas receive 17cm in less than 12 hours.
Many city areas were without electricity throughout the night.
The drain waters entered several colonies in Malkajgiri, Alwal and Kukatpally.
The situation was worse in some colonies of Kukatpally as industrial effluent found its way into the residential areas.
Dharani Nagar drain was full of foam caused by the discharge from factories.
In some places like Lothukunta and Uppal people were not able to come out of their homes due to the inundation.
Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation commissioner Janardhan Reddy said emergency teams and fire brigades were deployed to help the people in low lying areas to clear the water.
