Faster test to detect dioxins in cosmetics

- Staff Report

Dubai Central Laboratory (DCL) of Dubai Municipality has developed a new faster method for testing cosmetics and personal care products for toxic dioxins and delivering the results in less than an hour.

“This achievement is only a continuation of the process of innovation that the DCL is pursuing for the safety and well-being of the community,” said Ameen Ahmad Ameen, director of DCL.

He also pointed out the speed of providing the service while ensuring its quality, in addition to using environmentally friendly green laboratories for tests.

Complex method

“Dioxin analysis requires the provision of complex methods available only in a limited number of laboratories around the world. These tests are expensive and the costs vary according to the samples. This reflects the primary purpose of the Consumer Materials and Commodities Laboratories Section in the DCL to adopt a pioneering innovative project that ensures the delivery of quality services in accordance with international standards,” said Ameen.

Results within an hour

He said the usual methods of testing cosmetics and personal care products for toxic dioxins used to take days and involve chemicals that harm the environment were used with increased expenses.

“Instead of that, the laboratory developed a faster method of testing enabling it to submit the results in just 55 minutes and that too without the use of any chemicals,” said Ameen.

He said this will enable the laboratory to meet the needs of customers — companies, factories and individuals — in record time and at the lowest cost, and in line with the directions of the UAE government to be future-oriented and bring joy to all segments and categories of the society.
