Simmons does a Magic with triple double in play-offs
Superstar Wade’s 25 points not enough as they face elimination
Australian Ben Simmons became the first rookie since 1980 with a triple double in an NBA play-off game, helping spark the Philadelphia 76ers over Miami 106102 on Saturday.
Simmons scored 17 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and passed off 10 assists while J.J. Redick had 24 points to lead seven doubledigit scorers for the Sixers, who seized a 3-1 edge over the Heat in their best-of-seven opening round series.
Simmons became the first rookie since Magic Johnson to manage a triple double in a play-off game and at 21 is the third-youngest to accomplish the feat after Johnson and Cleveland’s LeBron James.
He’s also the first 76er with a play-off triple double since Charles Barkley in 1991.
And it came in a game where he was involved in a secondperiod scuffle.
After Philadelphia’s Robert Covington inflicted a hard foul upon Miami’s Goran Dragic, the Heat’s James Johnson took issue and shoved Covington, which prompted Simmons to confront Johnson as coaches and players entered to contain the melee.
Face elimination
Simmons received a personal foul for his trouble while Covington and Johnson were hit with technical fouls.
Joel Embiid, a 7-foot Cameroonian centre, added 14 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots for the 76ers in his second game back after an orbital bone fracture around his left eye. He missed the first two games of the series but returned wearing a protective facial mask.
Dwyane Wade came off the Miami bench to score a gamehigh 25 points, but the Heat face elimination in game five Tuesday at Philadelphia.
The NBA has fined Washington Wizards forward Markieff Morris and twin brother Marcus Morris of the Boston Celtics for their roles in separate incidents during playoff games.
Markieff Morris has been fined $25,000 by the NBA on Saturday for attempting to escalate an altercation and pushing an official during a game against Toronto on Friday night. Morris shoved official Ken Mauer aside when Morris and Toronto’s OG Anunoby had to be separated after a near fight that drew other players less than three minutes into the Wizards’ 122-103 victory.
Meanwhile, Marcus Morris was also docked $15,000 for criticising officials after the Celtics’ 116-92 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks. He was called for a technical foul in the third and was critical of the officiating after the game.
In October, the brothers were acquitted by a Phoenix jury in an aggravated assault trial. They were on trial on charges that they helped three other people beat a man in January 2015 outside a high school basketball game. The twins played for the Phoenix Suns at the time.
