The future of ‘Star Wars’

On May 4, the day the world celebrates the beloved franchise launched by George Lucas way back in 1977, we take a look at all the ‘Star Wars’ projects fans can look forward to

When Disney bought Lucasfilm way back in 2012, we had little idea of the scale with which they were planning on bringing back George Lucas’ beloved Star Wars franchise. But a trilogy and two stand-alone films later — and coming from the people who also gave us the Marvel Cinematic Universe ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’. — it is little surprise now that this once cult classic is now a mass produced zeitgeist, intent upon turning every consumer of entertainment into an active follower of the Skywalker legacy.

To celebrate Star Wars Day, apart from shouting ‘May the fourth be with you’ at random strangers, we’ve decided to take a look at all the projects that have been lined up to take the franchise forward, beginning with the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story. The galaxy’s number one scoundrel finally gets his origin story, not soon after he was brutally murdered by his emo son Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2016). Alden Ehrenreich replaces Harrison Ford as a young Han Solo, the film will dig into the rogue’s back story, including the Kessel Run and the much-talked-about winning of the Millennium Falcon off Donald Glover’s Lando Calrissian. The film has not been free of controversy with directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller having been unceremoniously ousted of the project, to be replaced by Ron Howard (Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind), who reportedly reshot most of the film for twice the budget. But even before this movie’s released, Ehrenreich revealed in a recent interview that he’s set to return as Solo in at least two more films. So, clearly, there’s a lot more where that came from, whether we like it or not.
