Sharjah Police are deploying the Rafid accident reporting service that will replace the Saaed system that is used in most emirates, officials announced at a press conference yesterday.

Downloading the Rafid app will let motorists send a picture of minor accidents after which a traffic expert will assess and issue a report. Specially designated Rafid staff members — not Sharjah Police officers — will respond to minor accidents, said owners Sharjah Asset Management, the investment arm of the Sharjah Government.

Motorists who use the app to report minor accidents will be charged Dh350, a saving of Dh50 as having a Rafid staffer come to the accident spot to issue a report will cost Dh400.

Rafid officials launched the app in collaboration with the Sharjah Police during a press conference at the Sharjah Golf and Shooting Club. Shaikh Mohammad Bin Saud Al Qasimi, chairman of the Sharjah Finance Department and chairman of Sharjah Asset Management attended.

Colonel Dr Ahmad Saeed Al Naour, deputy director-general of Sharjah Police, said around 300 minor accidents are reported in Sharjah every day.

“Rafid is an innovative solution that provides ease of convenience in reporting minor road accidents. Motorists no longer have to wait for a police patrol to reach the accident spot to investigate and issue a report, which is time consuming and a waste of resources.”

Salim Saeed Al Midfa, general manager of Rafid, said that a Rafid official will respond to an accident in under 15 minutes.

In the first stage, the Rafid fleet will comprise 50 SUVs and motorcycles. A total of 120 traffic experts will assess accidents, 30 per cent of whom are Emiratis. Fifteen people will work in the operations room in shifts. They are trained to handle calls in Arabic, English and Urdu.
