Residents of Dubai’s Al Khail Gate community have a month before they will have to pay for parking, Gulf News has learnt.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will activate parking meters in the Al Quoz residential neighbourhood on June 17, according to the RTA call centre.

The meters were installed last month after the RTA took over management of parking lots from the community’s management on April 4.

Following the agreement, RTA announced paid parking fees of Dh4 per hour and Dh32 for 24 hours throughout the year.

Tenants with permits can park either in reserved parking areas coded S 365 or in paid parking slots for visitors (365 L).

According to the call centre, 8,867 parking permits will be issued to tenants. The RTA will issue one permit for apartments with less than three bedrooms and two permits for apartments with three bedrooms.

No figure was available for the total parking spaces available in the community, but the call centre said there are 3,317 paid parking spots for visitors.

The RTA has also put up signs notifying a fine of Dh200 for parking in paid parking slots reserved for residents with seasonal permit cards (S 365).

Developed by Dubai Properties, the community has over 9,000 apartments spread across phase 1 and 2.

Tenants’ demand

Tenants with Ejari contracts had sought free parking for at least one car per apartment. Residents had expressed frustration at the lack of parking spaces and fines for parking violations and many had sought two permits for families having two or more cars.

However, the call centre has confirmed that there is no amendment in RTA’s policy as of now. It added that the department started issuing permits on Tuesday and tenants can apply at the RTA customer happiness centres in Dubai Municipality’s Al Manara Centre and Al Kifaf Centre.

These centres will work from 9am to 5pm from Sunday to Thursday during Ramadan. Paid parking will be activated after the Eid holidays.

Some residents said they were hopeful that RTA would still consider their requests submitted through the property management team.

“We hope the RTA will consider the burden this is going to put on middle-income tenants and make some amendments to the paid parking rules,” said A.R. Kurup, who lives in phase 2.

Gulf News did not immediately receive a response to questions sent to RTA, which the property management said, should be addressing all matters related to parking.
