STUDENTS MAKE A DIFFERENCE

OUTREACH, ENVIRONMENT AND INNOVATION PROGRAMME A SUCCESS

-

GEMS New Millennium School’s Community Outreach, Environment and Innovation Programme (COEIP) is designed to get the student community to plan and execute diverse environment, social outreach and innovation initiatives. These student–led programmes provide an opportunity to look at the world from different perspectives and encourage students to make a difference in their community.

World Health Day

In the first month of the 2017-18 academic year, students participated in World Health Day.

Our well-being champions organised BMI checks for parents during the Parent Consultation Meeting. In varied animal stripe motifs, the NMS campus came alive with the spirit of preserving and conserving endangered turtles via a COEIP campaign to raise Dh10,000 to sponsor and tag a turtle as part of the Gulf Turtle Conservation Project.

Dignity of labour

On May 1, students celebrated the ‘dignity of labour’ by donating dry food supplies to support staff with a special distribution drive organised at a workers accommodation in Al Quoz during Ramadan.

Mother’s Day was celebrated with the Mother’s Day Bonanza Breakfast where the boys cooked for their mothers.

Kindergarten students faced the Kinder Chef Challenge along with face and mural paintings. On May 17, our school adopted Dora, the turtle.

Pink month

The Cooking Oil Collection Challenge was taken up by the science department to recycle waste biodiesel.

Natural November

To mark Commemoration Day on November 30, students spread special assemblies and paid homage to the brave Emiratri soldiers. On November 7, we celebrated International Science and Peace Day through special programmes. The used cooking oil and recycling challenge continued throughout this month along with recycling of newspapers and cans. Environment Ambassadors and the Innogreen team collected old newspapers and used paper from kindergarten to Grade 10 students, resulting in a total collection of 1,185kg of paper.

Recycle, reforest, repeat

As an ongoing activity @ NMS, we have placed colourcoded collection bins at various locations @NMS to encourage students to collect paper, glass, plastic items, cans and newspapers. Each week, these will be weighed by students and sent to various recycling factories.

Dedicated December

NMS’ Winter Carnival was focused on raising funds for Dubai Cares. The students designed games and stalls to capture the interest of visitors.

Joyful January

The school organised a Toys Collection drive where students donated their old toys, which were collected by Emirates Red Crescent.
