Afire broke out at the Global Village in Dubai yesterday, sending at least one pavilion up in flames, an official of Dubai Civil Defence said.

No one was injured in the incident.

Brigadier Rashid Bu Flasa, Assistant Director-General for fire and rescue at Dubai Civil Defence, told Gulf News that the fire started at the ceiling of the Chinese Pavilion.

“We received an emergency call at 10:51am, and within nine minutes our firefighters from Al Barsha and Al Rashidiya stations reached the place and started dousing the blaze. We brought the fire under control by 11:21am and started the cooling procedure afterwards. No one was injured during the incident,” Brigadier Bu Flasa said.

The incident occurred at one of the pavilions during the demolition process and the fire was controlled in record time without any injuries or damages, Global Village has tweeted.

“Global Village is working with concerned authorities in further investigations and would like to thank all staff for their tireless efforts to provide the highest levels of safety and immediate response,” Global Village said.

Cause of fire

The site was handed over to fire experts at the Forensic Department of Dubai Police to determine the cause of the fire.

“The thick, black smoke was because of the decorative materials used in the pavilion. The quick response from firefighters helped contain the fire in the shortest possible time,” Brigadier Bu Flasa added.

The fire incident happened during the off-season of the Global Village. The last season ended on April 7.

Global Village has shut its doors marking the close of its 22nd season after logging a record-breaking seasonal attendance of more than six million visitors, said park officials in April.

In its 158 days of operation this season, Global Village said it rang in Dh2.9 billion in business transactions and showcased cultures of more than 75 countries at its wide array of 27 pavilions.
