Parts of Kolkata under knee-deep water
Taking children to school becomes a nightmare as residents fear disease outbreak
Lashed by overnight rains, parts of Kolkata remained under pools of water, knee-deep in some areas, yesterday.
In some areas, water also entered some houses.
According to the weather office, rainfall occurred at most places over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim and at many places over Gangetic West Bengal. Heavy to very heavy rain occurred at a few places over Kolkata, South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore districts.
The highest amounts of rainfall recorded in the state were 18cm in Haldia, 17cm in Diamond Harbour and 16cm in Alipore.
‘Every year’
In Kolkata, areas like Eastern Metropolitan Bypass, Garden Reach, Behala, Watgunge, Khidirpur and Hyde Road were severely waterlogged. Some areas witnessed accumulation of knee-deep water.
“Every year, water enters our houses and we are immensely troubled,” said a resident of Watgunge.
In Mukundapur area, the residents saw no difference even after speaking to the authorities.
“Water accumulates every year, and sometimes water stays for two to seven days and even a month. We face immense trouble in moving about, especially taking children to the school. We catch fever as the canal water overflows, and it is dirty so we get infections in our legs,” a Mukundapur resident said.
