Homes for the neglected

- By Aayan Shaikh ■ The reader is a Grade 4 pupil and a resident of Dubai.

On a recent visit to an old age home, I was able to spend some time with elderly people because of a school trip. However, as I entered the home I was sad to see that there were more than a dozen elderly people sitting in that room.

I have heard people saying that the elderly people were actually there because their children have abandoned them. I was shocked to know that so many people had abandoned their parents. The staff there really appreciated the effort we put in to bring a smile on their faces.

In return, they gave us a tour of the place. The elderly home was a good and caring place. They had different rooms used to make the resident’s stay pleasant with plenty of things and activities to keep them comfortable and engaged. There was a room dedicated for activities. There was a room where the elderly could relax. It was equipped with dim lights, animal sound effects and a disco ball. They even had a gymnasium.

We all had brought some goodies to distribute to the elderly people. Earlier, my class had practiced some songs to sing to them. After the distribution and the singing, we talked to the elderly people for some time and then gave them cards that we had made at home.

I could see that most of them really adored talking to us. In the end I was thankful that my school gave me an opportunity to experience this. I feel that this should be done in many schools regularly. The most important thing I learnt was that we should never abandon our parents. We all should try to give back to the community.
