Thousands on Twitter rally behind online call to #SaveIndia

Twitter users bring the country’s myriad issues to the fore

Twitter users are raising a host of issues under the hashtag #SaveIndia — from young doctors and lawyers not finding jobs, to a neglected, polluted Ganges River.

The Indian Youth Congress’ official twitter account @IYC launched the hashtag earlier this morning.

@IYC wrote: “India is suffering from widespread unemployment, threat to women’s safety and an education system that is crumbling. Modi government is busy making up lies to keep Indian citizens in the dark. All that BJP [Bharatiya Janata Party] cares for is power while ignoring the common man. #SaveIndia from this madness!”

Twitter users swiftly caught on, and began tweeting issues that require urgent attention from the BJP-led government.

One such tweet displayed an article by the Mumbai Mirror, which stated that three doctors, five lawyers, 167 MBA graduates and 423 engineers are all applying to become police constables in Mumbai, because of the lack of suitable opportunities in their fields.

@srinivasiyc tweeted the article and sought answers for the dismal state of the Indian job market: “What happened to your promises PM Modi? This is India’s reality. #SaveIndia”

Another issue tweeps raised is the pollution plaguing the Ganges — one of India’s most revered rivers. @Raresidhu wrote: “The Ganga will be more polluted in 2030 than it is now. #SaveIndia”

According to a Reuters report, less than a quarter of an estimated 4,800 million litres of sewage, which flows daily into the river from main towns and cities, is treated.

Kulisha Mishra @KulishaM wrote: “The government allocated Rs200 billion to clean Ganga! Where have they used the money? #SaveIndia”

With the rise in communal violence in India — an increase of 28 per cent over three years till 2017, according to data journalism website IndiaSpend — some tweeps asked for India to be rescued from divisive governance.

Rajkumar Patel @revolution_ raj7 wrote: “We need to #SaveIndia from divisive and unconstitutional powers. @BJP4India can be seen continuously dividing our country on the basis of casteism and misusing the power of federal and constitutional structure.”

Others feared for social and historical sites in the country, which is home to a rich cultural heritage, spanning over 5,000 years.

@trollsangh tweeted: “No funds to maintain national monuments but have huge funds to build statue and palatial party offices. #SaveIndia #CluelessPM”. ■
