is Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, said yesterday that he had contacted the Minister of Education and finalised the issue of transferring the supervision of private schools in the emirate to a local body comprising international education experts.
The announcement was made during the Direct Line phone-in programme, broadcast live by Sharjah Radio and Sharjah TV.
The decision to hand over the supervision of private schools to a local body of education experts follows a Ministry of Education announcement that 47 schools, most of them in the northern emirates, rated very weak have been asked not to enrol Emirati students from the next academic year.
Dr Saeed Mosabah Al Kaabi, chairman of the Sharjah Education Council, said yesterday during the Direct Line programme that it will take one month to complete the procedure.
He said there are around 400 educational institutions listed in Sharjah including schools and kindergarten and nurseries.
Al Kaabi said they have hired staff for the new educational body which will not implement the decision this year.
Students can stay on in their schools for the current academic year.
“We are seeking to begin a new academic year quietly and that every student finds a seat,” he said
“We will work hard to achieve the vision of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, who is following up the issue,” Al Kaabi said.
In an announcement on Monday, Shaikh Sultan said, “We are working to improve the education process in Sharjah not only in form but also in content. This body is working under my personal guidance to improve education standards, and will take care of everything going on in the classroom, such as the evaluation of teachers and teaching methods.”
Shaikh Sultan said the authority will supervise and improve all aspects of the educational process in private schools in the emirate. “I would like to assure the school owners and parents in Sharjah that we will take good care of your children. We have been working on this project for the past four to five months, and the necessary steps have been taken in this regard,” he added.
