EGA launches its first sustainability report
Firm aspires to be a sector leader in environmental and social responsibility
Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has launched its first sustainability report, charting its progress in emissions, safety, innovation, waste management, social responsibility and community engagement.
The firm — the largest nonoil industrial firm in the UAE — said in a press statement that it aspires to be among the world’s leading metals and mining firms in meeting envorinmental and social responsibility.
“We recognise that our role must extend beyond simple compliance or keeping up with our peers. Working with our customers, regulators, shareholders and stakeholders, we intend to be an innovator and a leader in sustainability,” said Abdulla Kalban, managing director and chief executive officer of EGA,
The report focuses on EGA’s achievements in 2017, but incorporates data from 2014, 2015 and 2106 to demonstrate trends since the firm was founded in the merger of Dubai Aluminium and Emirates Aluminium in 2014.
ASI certification
In 2017 EGA applied to join the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI), a global programme to promote greater sustainability and transparency in the aluminium industry. It was the first Middle East firm to apply.
EGA said it wants to become certified to ASI’s performance standards, global standards launched in December to rate responsible production, sourcing and stewardship within the value chain.
