Will thrifty Spurs suffer for not spending?

Pochettino’s side are the only club yet to part with a single pound this summer

It has been all quiet on the sales front for Spurs, who are officially the only Premier League club to have not made a single signing during the summer transfer window.

To stay up there with the big dogs, Spurs are going to have to make some changes. Quickly.

If Spurs have any desire to finish in the top four, they will need to get in some big names on their side.

With seven players out and zero in, Spurs fans have every right to be concerned.

With clubs such as Manchester United and Liverpool spending multi-millions on new recruits, maybe Spurs should finally take a hint and latch on to some new players before the window closes on Thursday.

With players such as Xherdan Shaqiri and Alisson Becker joining Liverpool, and Chelsea raising the stakes by landing Jorghino, Tottenham are going to need to take some decisions to even have a chance of ranking high on the leaderboard.

This move, or rather, the lack of one, by Spurs, calls into question manager Mauricio Pochettino’s expertise.

This bad business move on his part is not doing much to help his reputation. He needs to prove his worth both on the field as well as in the transfer market if he wants to be in the same league as Pep Guardiola and Maurizio Sarri.

It is important to have losers in every league, and maybe Spurs are embracing the role already.

For their sake, I hope Pochettino has a power move up his sleeve or an exciting new unveiling scheduled moments before the deadline.

So will we (finally) get to see any new faces or will all eyes be glued to Harry Kane who will be left to carry the team to whatever their goal is.

To answer the question, will the Spurs suffer? Probably.

Unless they turn their game plan entirely. Time is ticking Spurs.

Tottenham haven’t made a signing yet and there are only three days left until the transfer window closes. So what? Quit panicking! Here’s a thought, maybe the completion of their new £400 million stadium (set to open against Liverpool on September 15) might have something to do with it.

It was pretty obvious that this was always going to be a conservative transfer window anyway what with the developments at the club.

And let’s face it, they should be laughing so long as they can keep hold of their best players; Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Danny Rose and Kieren Trippier — who have just carried England to the World Cup semifinals by the way.

The big worry was not who they could bring in this summer but rather who they could stop leaving, and they seem to have done quite well on that front. If you’re a whining Spurs fan, you should be concentrating on the fact that there have been no major departures and instead celebrate the new contracts signed by coach Mauricio Pochettino and World Cup top scorer Kane.

You could have been starting this season much worse off than you are. This same side have finished inside the top three for the past three seasons running.

With no new signings they may not exactly be contending for the title, but the squad still has a World Cup winning keeper in Hugo Lloris and two Belgian defenders in Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen who also reached the semis in Russia. It’s not a disaster.

There’s no reason why Spurs can’t still hold their own in the top four this season and no evidence to suggest that they really needed to splash the cash. They spent almost £90 million on five players last summer and another £25 million on Lucas Moura in January.

Let this be a summer of consolidation and then go again when the gate receipts from a new 62,000 capacity stadium (up from 36,000) kicks in — it’s a marathon not a sprint, and football is not always about money.
