UAE-based designers have an opportunity to compete in creating uniforms for more than 30,000 volunteers and staff at Dubai Expo 2020.

Competition designs must incorporate elements of Emirati culture and include sustainable elements, which should be weather appropriate, practical and modest.

Three finalists, selected by September 30, 2018, will receive Dh50,000 and be tasked with creating samples of the full line, including top, bottom, outer jacket, hat, bag, tie, scarf, kandoura and ghotra, abaya and shayla, and an Expo 2020 accessory.

The winning designs will be announced in the fourth quarter of 2018.

Worn every day, the uniforms for men and women will reflect the Expo’s theme of ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’ and need to be aligned with one of the event’s three subthemes: Sustainability, designs using recycled or organic fabric, zero waste concepts, or which take into account sustainable practices and innovations throughout the supply chain.

The competition is being supported by Dubai Design District (d3), Dubai Design and Fashion Council and Fashion Forward Dubai.

Entries will be judged by a committee comprising senior members of the Expo 2020 Dubai team and supporting organisations.

“We are looking for a uniform that embodies the Emirati character and will represent the UAE on the world stage. It should also create a sense of pride and unity,” Rita Penteado, vice-president, Human Resources, Workforce and Volunteers at Expo 2020 Dubai, said.

The Expo 2020 runs from October 20, 2020 to April 10, 2021. Dubai is expected to receive 25 million visitors during its six-month duration.
