After Friday’s “honour killing” of a young man from the Dalit community, who had married an upper caste girl in Miryalaguda town, Nalgonda district, police arrested the girl’s father and uncle yesterday.

Pranay Kumar was killed in broad daylight — in full view of his pregnant wife, whom he had brought to a private hospital for a routine check-up.

After attacking and stabbing him with sharp-edged weapons, the assailants escaped in a car. However a special police team tracked and arrested Maruti Rao and his brother Shravan Kumar.

‘I want him hanged’

Widow Amrutha, who was in deep shock over her husband’s murder, said she had no doubt her own father was responsible for the incident.

“Let him be my father but I want him to be hanged for killing my husband,” she said as local Member of Parliament G. Sukhinder Reddy and a few others visited her at hospital.

“They have done it because Pranay loved me and married me.” Crying inconsolably she insisted on seeing the body of her husband.

“If I had not come to hospital my husband would be alive today,” she said. “Somebody hit him, when he fell down they killed him.”

She said she could not identify who the assailants were, but her father had been threatening to kill his sonin-law and had been keeping an eye on the couple’s movements for a long time.

“My mother had warned about his intentions,” Amrutha said. “I had informed my mother that I was pregnant and she used to call me from time to time to inquire about my health. But my father was pressuring me to abort the child.”
