Your clothes, your rules

- ■ The reader is a student based in Dubai. By Avanthika Balaji

Fashion may seem frivolous at times but does your choice of clothing reflect your attitude or the person you really are? Actress Marilyn Monroe once quoted, “It is better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.” Through the decades, clothing has been an important part of our society, and clothes have reflected the times. As the world changed and moved on, fashion was also transformed.

Even though it is sometimes believed that fashion is unfair and creates unrealistic expectations for men and women, what you wear is an outward expression of your personality. As we fold away the crop tops and sandals deep into our closet, we are browsing through the shelves and stocking up our wardrobe with items fit for the coming season. When we dare to take fashion risks, people take notice. Whether it is for an event or just another day in your life, wear something that suits you best.

We in the UAE are lucky because we are spoilt for choice. For a teenager like me, an evening of fun would be hitting the mall, pulling clothes off the hanger and trying them on until I have made the perfect choice. For me, fashion is about uniqueness and not adhering to what is considered ‘latest’ or ‘trendy’. The best way to enjoy current fashion is to wear your confidence, your best smile and be yourself. The joy of dressing is an art but mind you, elegance is the only fashion statement that never goes out of fashion!
