Filmmakers constantly raising the stimulus

- From Dr Andrea Tosatto Psychologist working in Dubai

People who are more intelligent are able to analyse potential risk to their wellbeing. They have enough capacity for abstract thinking and looking at potential outcomes in the future compared to someone who lives more day-by-day. In my opinion, what makes people desire horror films is to exorcise their own fear. If I watch it on the screen, knowing it’s fake, I take control of my fear. The problem, however, is that often you don’t only deal with your personal fears but also the personal fears of the director, which could be more disturbing.

The main problem related to horror films according to me is that they are going over the top and audiences develop tolerance to the stimulus. In 1973 when The Exorcist was released, a lot of people fainted and ambulances had to be called. Now, a lot of people will watch the same thing and laugh. What does it mean? Our benchmark of what we consider acceptable has been raised. We adjusted to this level of stimulus and now to stay interested we need something stronger.
