Ozal wins Turkish general elections
1983 - The leader of Turkey’s conservative Motherland Party, Turgut Ozal, claimed victory in Turkish general elections, saying his party had won a majority in the 400-seat parliament. Latest results broadcast by state radio and television showed the Motherland Party had won 212 seats. The rightist Nationalist Democracy Party (NDP), led by retired general Turgut Sunalp, was trailing in third place with 23.3 per cent and 61 seats.
