Ozal wins Turkish general elections

1983 - The leader of Turkey’s conservati­ve Motherland Party, Turgut Ozal, claimed victory in Turkish general elections, saying his party had won a majority in the 400-seat parliament. Latest results broadcast by state radio and television showed the Motherland Party had won 212 seats. The rightist Nationalis­t Democracy Party (NDP), led by retired general Turgut Sunalp, was trailing in third place with 23.3 per cent and 61 seats.
