50-day countdown begins for Mubadala Tennis event

Djokovic and Venus among big names announced so far

- Staff Report

Today marks 50 days to go until the 11th Mubadala World Tennis Championship (MWTC).

Confirmed players for the December 27-29 event so far include world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, French Open finalist Dominic Thiem, defending champion Kevin Anderson, Next Gen ATP title holder Hyeon Chung and fellow Next Gen star Karen Khachanov, who recently beat Djokovic to win the Paris Masters.

Djokovic, the 31-year-old new world No. 1 and 14-time Grand Slam champion, will be making his fifth visit to Abu Dhabi — and with three previous MWTC wins under his belt, he is no doubt one of the firm favourites to take the title again this year.

Commenting on his achievement, Novak Djokovic said: “What a year it’s been — after a lot of intense matches and injuries, it feels great to be crowned No. 1! I love coming to Abu Dhabi and I can’t wait to see my fans once again this year at MWTC. The Championship offers the perfect opportunity to finetune my preparations ahead of the Australian Open and I am really looking forward to competing there again. I very much hope I get to walk away with my fourth win!”

Joining them on the women’s side will be seven-time Grand Slam winner Venus Williams. Played on the same surface and similar weather conditions to the Australian Open — the year’s first Grand Slam — the MWTC offers attendees the equivalent of a Grand Slam quarter-final with some of the biggest names in tennis.

Each day will have a different theme for visitors from kids to foodies and ladies days on each of the respective three days. Additional player names will be announced in the coming weeks.

Tickets start from Dh100 and can be purchased from www.ticketmaster.ae or Virgin Megastore, or by calling 800 86 823 from within the UAE or +971 4 366 2289 from outside the country. For more information visit www. mubadalawtc.com
