Abu Dhabi announces new measures to make roads safer when visibility is poor |

Driving in Abu Dhabi? Prepare to slow down in bad weather, as the Traffic Safety Committee in the emirate yesterday announced that the speed limit will be reduced to 80km/h when visibility drops to around 200 metres.

This comes as part of the committee’s plan to implement the highest practices in ensuring road traffic safety during such conditions.

The modified road speeds are determined according to traffic safety during adverse weather.

Where it applies

The modified speeds are to be displayed on the smart towers installed on Shaikh Rashid Bin Saeed Street (Abu Dhabi–Dubai Road) and Shaikh Khalifa Street (Al Saadiyat).

All motorists are urged to follow the reduced-speed limits until the visibility is clear and then return to the regular speed limit signs.

As for roads without smart towers, a fixed speed limit sign with a traffic light will be installed to notify the drivers to reduce speed to 80km/h.

Radar control limits will be adjusted accordingly.

The committee emphasised the importance of benefiting from futuristic solutions and utilising developed systems and programmes to notify the drivers of changes on the roads and sending out safe driving tips.

This is to ensure safety at all times. public

Smart system warnings

In addition, it is important to utilise the National Early Warning System to send out messages and notifications to warn the drivers and residents in adjacent areas.

The low visibility will be monitored using different channels like National Center of Meteorology and Seismology’s visibility sensors on the smart towers.

All drivers are asked to comply with the directions shown on the smart towers, follow the identified speed limits and stop if visibility becomes restricted.

Additionally, drivers are requested to increase the safe distance between vehicles to avoid accidents and to never overtake or change lanes in low visibility.
