Stronger by expansion
Come March 29 when the United Kingdom leaves, there will be 27 members in the European Union, and it will look as if the wheels are coming off the European experiment.
Wrong. The reality is that EU still makes up the world’s third-largest economy, representing some 500 million people. And more nations are lining up to join. Turkey applied for membership more than three decades ago. There’s a queue of nations seeking admittance, including Albania, Bosnia, Northern Macedonia, Montenegro and Kosovo. Ukraine too would love to be a member.
