Damaged cable affects power supply in Al Nahda

- BY AGHADDIR ALI Staff Reporter

Adamaged main power cable which supplied electricity to buildings was the cause of a power outage in Al Nahda around 1pm yesterday, said a senior official at the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa).

After nearly five hours of service disruption to homes and businesses in some parts of Al Nahda, electricity was restored.

The power cable was damaged by a heavy vehicle. It was replaced with a new one, the Sewa official said adding that by 5.50pm power supply was restored.

Residents of some affected buildings, especially tall towers, were unable to access their apartments and were waiting in the lobbies with their children as it was difficult to climb stairs to their apartments.

Some residents complained that there was no backup power in their buildings. In one instance, a property maintenance team bought a new battery to start the generator, and let residents return to their flats.

Mohammad Arshad, a resident of Al Nahda 2 building, told Gulf News that he lived on the 14th floor. “It’s a big problem that the building does not have a generator to use in emergency cases,” he said.
