China needs to change its behaviour if it wants to maintain good economic and trade relations with the US as well as with the rest of the world, a former under-secretary of state for Political Affairs at the US Department of State said in Abu Dhabi yesterday.

“China’s behaviour in terms of technology transfer and market access along with intellectual property rights has been atrocious and is a problem that affects not only the US but broadly the world, especially Europe,” said Thomas Shannon at the Institute of International Finance (IIF) Mena summit.

“China needs to begin to change its behaviour in a significant way if it wants to maintain the kind of value added, high-end trading and economic relationships it wants to establish in the world.”

He also said there is broad support for the approach on China within the US Congress as well as across the United States.
